Ok, and a couple other reasons I love Mother’s Day (aside from the fact that I have such an amazing mother) is because first of all, my kids have made me into a mother, and I get to watch their excitement as they do things like set the table for me and present me with their home-made notes and gifts. And second, because I have an amazing husband who takes care of everything even if he’s sick…which he was yesterday.

I have this very favorite quote about mothers. When I first read it I was pregnant and I remember just sitting there bawling…tears of complete happiness that I got to be a mother, as well as overwhelmed wonder…how was I going to take advantage of every moment with my kids? And then I realized all I can do is the best I can do, and it’s ok.

But I love to read this quote because it reminds me to remember that the every day things are the best things, and to treasure them up because they won’t last. I especially loved that Elder Ballard quoted it in this last conference.

“The biggest mistake I made is the one that most of us make while [mothering]. I did not live in the moment enough. This is particularly clear now that the moment is gone, captured only in photographs. There is one picture of the three of them sitting in the grass on a quilt in the shadow of the swing set on a summer day, ages 6, 4 and 1. And I wish I could remember what we ate, and what we talked about, and how they sounded, and how they looked when they slept that night. I wish I had not been in such a hurry to get on to the next thing: dinner, bath, book, bed. I wish I had treasured the doing a little more and the getting it done a little less.”–Anna Quindlen
I hope everyone had a great Mother’s Day!

  1. Shawni,

    This post made me cry.

I had an AWFUL juggling/balancing/working/mothering day yesterday and I spent the evening hiding under my bed with wine & chocolate!

Can I use this quote on my blog today?

I needed the reminder to slow down & let go & ENJOY the marvelous blessings of Victoria & Sofia

  2. I love this Quote!!! I’ve heard it before, but I need to hear it everyday. I’m going to post it on my fridge. Today.
Your family is beautiful, just beautiful.

  3. It’s so good to stop and read things like your quote because in the hustle and bustle of the day it often seems like all you can do is get them fed, bathed and in bed.

We really do have these treasures for such a short time. I need to stop and play more, laugh more, give them squeezes and tell them I love them because someday they won’t be here in my home everyday. And I know that will be here sooner than I think.

Hope you had a wonderful Mother’s Day. You are an incredible mother!!
