Happy Mother’s Day to all the inspiring Mothers in my life.

To those who are nearest and dearest to me…I crave opportunities to soak up your examples like a sponge.

To those I come in contact with in my carpools and kids’ classes.

To those I’ve never met but I feel my heart interlaced with since they write such beautiful motherhood sentiments that lift me up.

To those library moms I see at the doctor’s offices I frequent.

To all those Moms who aren’t really biological Mothers yet but who yearn for the day it will come to them with all their hearts…

…and in the meantime they selflessly “mother” all those around them with all the love they can muster up.

And to Moms who are just trying their darnedest to make it through the day like the one who was standing there at an intersection yesterday holding up a sign that said “single mom. trying to survive. please help.”

Oh, especially to her.

My Aunt (herself one of those nearest and dearest Mothers I admire with all my heart) has a quote up in her house that says “Motherhood is like getting pecked to death by a duck.” And boy howdy, sometimes it is.

But the rewards it gives so far outweigh all the “pecking.”

My sister (another one of my most near and dear motherhood examples) started a website for Mothers. And I wanted to give it’s address link as a “gift” for Mother’s Day. Because it’s all about empowering Moms. And let’s face it, sometimes that’s what we need after getting “pecked to death.”

Plus it’s got a spot to share your own “motherhood secrets.” Everyone’s got them…those moments where you realize, “hey wait, this works!” And that new thing you did becomes one of the best new things in your bag of motherhood “tricks.”

So check it out here. (And on my sidebar.)

I am so grateful for all the examples in my life.

No matter how old I get, my heart will still always skip a beat when I hear one of my children calling me “mother.”

Because that means I get to be just that to them.

And I couldn’t feel more blessed because of it.

Happy Mother’s Day!

  1. Happy Mother’s Day to you Shawni! What an unbelievably wonderful Mother’s Day gift to me to get a comment from you on MY blog! I was sooo excited. I am so, so very honored. Your blog is what inspired me to start my blog. I am sooo inspired by you. Thank you so very much for your nice words about my daughter! I hope you had a great day!
P.S. I didn’t get your book for Mother’s Day like I hoped, so ordering it today is on top of my list to do for the day!

  2. HAPPY MOTHERS DAY TO YOU! that was a very sweet tribute to mothers.:)

i have to say that that quote on your aunts wall is one that i read when tristan was about 6 months old (except it read “motherhood is like being pecked to death by chickens”) and it was true then but has become more true as more children come into our home. it has kind of become MY “thing” and my friends have heard me say it a million times. when i’m frusterated with my kids all i have to say is, “I AM SO PECKED” and they know EXACTLY what that means. i would choose a life of being pecked over any other life out there. i am defined by the people who call me mother.

  3. After all the “pecking” there’s nothing in this world quite like seeing your little “peckers” become truly amazing mothers!
    Love you forever,
    Mom

  4. Happy Mother’s Day to you!!!
My mom got me your book and she even had you and your mom sign it!! I can’t WAIT to read it. I told my mom about your blog and that i read it everyday, it’s one of the things that I look forward to doing everyday.

    Thanks so MUCH!

  5. That is the truth…after teaching children with special needs each day it is at times so difficult to be “pecked” all over again at home. Thank you for your inspiring words to help me get through the week.

  6. You say it all so well! I love your insight and the library mom thing made me laugh out loud. I have aspired for 24 years now to be one of those moms. Oh well.
    Thanks for your blog!
