I did it.
I dusted off the wheat grinder and finally made bread (those who brought us the most delicious home-made bread after I wrote about how much I wanted to make it here will be glad to know I finally got my act together…thanks again by the way for that!!).

I’ve got no excuses not to make it now that I got my dream Bosch mixer for Mother’s Day (thanks Dave).
…And I have little helpers I can boss around to get me the stuff I need.

The first batch didn’t go so well. Guess which one it was:Yeah, if you think you can’t mess up bread, I’m living proof that yes, you sure as heck can.

Note to self: don’t scald the yeast next time by putting the water in microwave.

When that happens you get hard-as-a-rock bricks of bread. So I threw them away and started right over again (except this one because I kinda like it).

I must admit, the second batch was pretty good. It actually melted in my mouth.

And my house still smells so delicious I wish I could just bottle it all up and let a little out each day.

  1. Yay! Good for you! We make whole wheat bread in our bread machine at least once a week. Here's the recipe we use:

    4 c. whole wheat flour
    2 tsp. salt
    2 TB gluten
    4 TB sprouted flaxmeal
1/2 cup ground nuts and seeds (your choice – I usually use cashews,
almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds)
    2 ½ TB. Oil
    2 TB. honey
    1 & ¾ c water
    1 scant TB yeast

  2. Good for you! Now you really are the Everything Woman. Darn, I think that's the only thing I had up on you until now 🙂 I have the same machine–I love it! It's so nice to be able to make enough bread to be able to put some in the freezer and not make it again for at least a week. Welcome to the bread making world!

  3. Yum! I wish I lived next door!

And your Max is the dang cutest kid! I was laughing reading about the bike thing, because my Jake did the same thing, except he would ride his sister's pink cruiser…..with all the guys…..love it.

  4. You have got me motivated! It is one of my summer goals too! I wish my kids liked it as much as I do. I am the one who ends up eating it all!

  5. Way to go! Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Call me on my cell next time. 🙂

The bread looks so yummy. It would be delicious with the jam I am making.

Don't you love your Bosch? I got one for my birthday. They are the best!

  6. Oh man I have a wheat grinder in my garage that was my mom's. She always had homemade whole wheat bread baking when we got home from school and it was so good! I wish I could make it. I am soooo not a bread maker! With Honey and butter…really there is no better treat.
I loved your little loaf! Very cute!
    Way to go Shawni!

  7. Shawni-
I know this comment has nothing to do with your delicious bread, but would you mind sharing some of your favorite books you've read in your Mother-daughter book club? Just trying to put together our summer reading list.

I am a friend of Kerri Winegars and I believe we had Psych from Larry Ficks (is that his name) years ago and I had English with Saren.

Anyways…I'd love a few titles which you and your girls loved, when you have a spare moment (ha, ha).
