I’d like to introduce our newest “family member:”Yes, I finally decided to switch to Canon.

And although I feel like I’m getting carpel tunnel in my fingers and wrists trying to figure out all the new knobs and buttons, I really like my new camera.

That’s not to say I haven’t looked longingly and lovingly back at my Nikon beauty over and over again as I’ve tried to figure out how in the world to have this new one take it’s place! It’s proven to be a big adjustment both with the technicalities of the camera and all my settings in Lightroom.

But, slowly but surely I’m falling in love.

Here are the reasons I switched:

1) I wanted to upgrade to a full-frame camera. This meant that either brand I chose I’d need to invest in some new lenses. (My favorite lens I used for EVERYTHING with my Nikon was made specifically for a crop-frame camera.) So I kinda felt like I was at square-one on the equipment although I do have a LOT of Nikon stuff to sell now:(Look at those beautiful boxes…even the Nikon boxes are works of art in my opinion. I know, I’m totally way too dramatic and I know Dave is rolling his eyes as he reads this, but I’m into that stuff and the Canon box is just plain old black and white. Ok, gotta stop, I am a Canon girl now…)

2) This Canon camera has amazing video capabilities. I’m talking crystal-clear, perfect picture. And I feel like I want to video stuff more often. Pictures capture glimpses which I obviously adore, but there’s nothing like having voices and funny idiosyncrasies captured forever alongside the pictures.

3) I read tons and tons of reviews which made me realize that I really couldn’t go wrong with either camera…they were both works of art. But I wanted the video option.

4) I went to this great professional photography store and experimented with both full-frame cameras I had my eye on. The Canon is way lighter than the hefty Nikon one, and in some ways seems almost like a toy in comparison (sorry Canon die-hards), BUT, then I thought to myself, what’s wrong with a lighter camera when it’s something I carry all over creation?? The Canon just felt like a good fit for me.

So, there you have it. I am a new woman.

Now I just need to figure out how the heck to STORE all these humongo files I’m taking (I think the 21 megapixels is a little bit overkill), and how to keep up with and manage the video stuff.

I’m off to ice my sore hands…

  5. I'm a fellow blog stalker. We have mutual friends, but we've never met. Hi. Now we've met. 🙂

I'm a Nikon girl, but I have nothing against Canon. That's a great camera too.

Let me know what you have to sell to, I'd be interested.

Love your blog btw. Thanks for making me feel inspired about my life.

  6. And I'm sure one of those boxes has my dream lens. The 17-55mm 2.8. I've been waiting over a year for that baby. The plan is to get it for my 30th birthday and 10 year anniversary, but I would love to know if you're willing to sell it to a perfect stranger three states away! 🙂 You'd be giving it to a good home, I promise to treat it just like one of my own! 🙂

  7. Shawni…please do let us know pricing for your lens!
The 21 pixels was something I was SO impressed with Canon!
Can't wait to see your shots from your new family memember!!

  8. Hey! I too, like everyone else, would love for you to share your favorite Nikon lens. I forget which one was your new favorite. I am hoping to get a new lens soon before this baby of ours arrives! 🙂 Love reading your blog, just wish I could see you in person every once in a while. Claudia needs to move back so I can see you every now and again!

  9. I own the Canon Mark ii and love it 🙂 For everyday pictures I actually started taking them on Medium size because I don't normally need a larger picture. WhenI'm staking something more important I switch to Large. With my old 5D I had started taking everything in RAW, but with this baby, the file sizes are so humongous and the quality is amazing even without being in RAW. So… just a thought. Best of luck! It is a saweeeet camera!

  10. I'm a Nikon girl too, lusting over your gold boxed pile! You should call my husband and tell him to buy it for me! 🙂

Half of my in laws have Canon SLRs and the other half uses Nikons. When we use each others for a quick picture it's pretty hilarious. I hope you're ambidextrous enough to switch and judging from your gorgeous photos I'm sure you are!

Been reading along on your blog for a few weeks and it's wonderful. Thanks!

  16. Hooray for you! I agonized over the Nikon vs. Canon option (though not for the full-frame option) and chose the Canon for about the same reasons — video! Have fun with the switch.

  17. Maybe I should bring my canon on our girls trip and you can show me some stuff I have the Canon Eos 40D. I know I am not using it to it's full potential…I know what a waste I am….but I need to learn

  18. Congrats on your new addition. I'm excited to see your pic's! I've got a great Canon camera but am now in the market for a bag to carry all the fun loot in. Any recommendations??

ps. sounds like you need to do a post on lenses and editing software. You've definitely struck a chord.

    Thanks for always inspiring!

  19. I have "stalked" your blog for a few months now and you are an inspiration to me. Thank you for lifting me up on those days when I didn't know how to do it all!
I am also a Canon girl and i LOVE my canon. I can't wait to see all your "works of art".

  20. Sounds like you need to have a silent auction for all of your beloved Nikon items. How will you ever decide who gets what unless it is by the highest bidder? I am a Nikon lover, just because of Kara. Can't wait to see and hear how you love the Canon…
(Can I say again how fabulous you and your mom did at TOFW. So glad I was there to see and hear your imparted wisdom. Thank you for sharing.)

  21. A year later – are you still glad you made the change?

I'm nikon – but I shoot a lot of dance, gymnastics and wakeboarding so I like the faster continuous focus. But for portraits I'm longing to make the switch.

My favorite lens was made for the crop sensor as well – struggling cause I really want to go full-frame.
