home sweet home: dining room

by Shawni

This was our dining room a long time ago:
It held no furniture for YEARS (but it was a great dance/gymnastics room).

Then we finally filled it up:
And spruced it up a little bit with this molding:
Here is the finished product from one angle:

And here it is from the other direction:
(This is where we have Sunday dinner.)

That wall over yonder is my favorite part. Denise saw these old, rusty window panes at this antique shop and told me I needed them. She has vision. I do not. (I love her.)

Dave’s comment when he saw those heavy metal things was that we needed to make sure we were all caught up with our tetanus shots.

But I LOVE how they turned out.

Denise had the idea to put a bunch of dining stuff in each frame, but I could never find enough stuff, so I got foam core board cut to fit in each frame, covered each one with white coarse linen, and stuck in pictures of places we’ve been (you know how I salivate over traveling the world). We like to talk about those places over Sunday dinner.

And it means something to all of us.

It turned out beautifully.

Things I love:

That you got rid of the area rug! I like that it gives the space a fresh, clean look.

The window pane turned picture frames. The foam core board, linen and tiny push pins are such a great idea. I may have to use this one some day.

And the finishing touches with the molding, white mirror frame, and painting the bronze wall hanging blue.

LOVE the molding,
and how did you re-paint/treat that dark wall-carving-thing-ee?
I really like the update on that. I have some pieces that I like and still want to use, but they need a little change.

I love that you decorate with pictures. I have almost only pictures on my walls and LOVE every single one of them. I wonder sometimes if people think its a little overkill. But, thats the first thing people compliment always. Looks great!

I think it is so smart to switch from light carpet to the dark carpet on the stairs. It gives a nice contrast, and being such a high traffic area, it's probably a lot easier to keep clean looking. I really like it!

Oh wow! What a beautiful room! I love your style.

I'm doing a post with DIY window projects and was referred to you by Kristy at Sliding Down the Stairs. I love what you've done and if you're interested in me including a picture and link, I'd love to 'show it off' for you and have it in the collection (or in showing off your makeover – let me know!). 🙂

Have a wonderful weekend!
Nice to "meet" you.

You have a beautiful home (and family!). How did you do the molding in your dining room? We are about ready to embark on this project, and I can't find this style anywhere. Is there a name for it? Thanks a ton!
