Lucy can read

by Shawni

(sort of)

She’s putting together words and we are so darn excited about it.

The credit goes to her big sister who is also a reader:

And to one of my Young Women from last year (Haley) who volunteered to come over each week as a service to read with her.
Yes that is pure bribery in Lucy’s hand: a squinkie. Haley sure knows the key to Lucy’s heart.

Wow, we are so lucky to have so many kind, good helpers.

We are hoping with all our hearts to have Lucy truly ready for regular Kindergarten next year.

Way to go Lucy. Shawni, I am not sure if schools are different in Arizona compared to here in Canada, but most kids are not reading until the end of kinder, going into grade 1, i think she's actually ahead in reading!!!

I think she's ahead too. My 6.5 year old is just starting to put words together.

Shawni- I found the best book ever for teaching your child to read. It worked wonders on my son and he was reading on a second grade level by the time he entered kindergarten. It's called "Teach Your Child To Read In 100 Easy Lessons" written by Seigfried Engelmann. You can buy it used for about $7 at Barnes and Noble.com. The lessons are very short and simple- it only takes about 15 minutes. We skipped Sundays. I have several friends that used it too. It works! Good luck with Lucy- how exciting for her! -Amanda Shaw

That is amazing! I'm so impressed! It seems like she is doing so well. I think that is a direct result of all the hard work you and others have put into helping her. Congrats!

SO sweet! I love BOB Books. I home school, and I have also used "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons". I must say though–Lucy is doing great! I only had one child who was reading like that at her age (I believe children progress differently in all areas of learning). My kids are all great readers and they love to read–as do I. Good for Lucy and her helpers! 🙂

Well done Lucy.Oh those wonderful phonic books!, sometimes I think I might scream reading 'Chip put the pot on the red pan' one more time'. Like you I am on child number 5 and your post just reminded me what a miracle the skill of reading is.
You may be surprised how quickly Lucy builds up a sight vocabulary, she will be good at it.

Wow, that is so exciting! She is doing so well!! I really need to work on that with Collin. He's having such a hard time just learning the letters.

That is great! I agree with Beth- such a sweet voice! I was a kindgergarten aide for a little while and hearing a child learn to read is one of the most rewarding experiences I've had 🙂

Way to go Lucy! That's awesome! I agree with everyone who has mentioned "Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons." We used it with our daughter during her PreK year. She just started kindergarten and her teacher keeps commenting on her reading skills. It makes learning to read so easy. Love the BOB books, too. She has the sweetest little voice.

How exciting! Congrats Lucy and mom! I think teaching your kids to read is one of the most important jobs in the world. It is so satisfying to see them finally 'get it' too.

she's doing GREAT!!!!!
that's just awesome!!!
it's not like it used to be where you are expected to read going into kindy now instead of coming out of 1st grade, is it? at least here where we are, they expect them to start reading in Pre-K (preschool)! crazy!

Way to go!

And speaking of Squinkies…Target has a 3 day sale going on right now and the 12 pack that are normally $10 are on sale for $6.
