2012-10 halloween (Confession:  I made Max stick on something from the costume box just for this collage…sorry Max, but you’re kind of a cute alien volleyball player… 🙂 Let’s take a little closer look at these guys. Usually we have a big hoopla pot-luck dinner with a bunch of neighbors.  I’m always scrambling to get stuff ready for that, get kids gussied, take pictures, etc. But this year we purposefully just hung out and did our own thing. We missed the friend thing, but we still hung with friends during the Trick-or-Treating rounds.  And I loved it.  I think everyone was a little less stressed. Elle’s Gangster buddy came over to pick her up for their teenager get-together.2012-10-31 Halloween 64040 (Too old for Trick-or-Treating.)2012-10-31 Halloween 64047 I LOVE this picture:2012-10-31 Halloween 64054 Mitt just hanging with the girls…2012-10-31 Halloween 64058 Love these two punk rockers.2012-10-31 Halloween 64055 …who got a boatload of candy:2012-10-31 Halloween 64060 Everyone took off in their own directions in our neighborhood crawling with kids.  Dave, Josh and I hung with Lucy, the only one who wanted to be around us boring grown-ups.  Claire and her friend came home and literally carpeted our floor with their candy for the “candy trade.”2012-10-31 Halloween 64064 And Grace joined in shortly after (after I went to drag her home).2012-10-31 Halloween 64074 It’s a good thing these little sisters got a good candy haul because they are sharing with the non-trick-or-treaters (Max and Elle) just as great as can be. Lucy melted my heart when we got home from our short little Trick-or-Treating stint.  She was SO excited to pass out candy.  When we got dangerously low, she came up with a great solution all by herself:  She happily dumped her bag of candy into the Trick-or-Treat bowl and continued to give it ALL out to all the goblins and ghouls that came by. Oh man, love that little black cat. Dave and I went to pick up Max and friends at a HUGE teenager party.  Wowzers, we could hardly get into that neighborhood to grab them it was like teenage haven galore.  I wish I had a picture of him in his Steve Nash jersey with that big smile stretched across his face from all the fun. It was a great night, but I was still happy as could be to pull down those decorations first thing the next morning and get onto Gratitude Month. I love November.

  1. It's awesome how 'in to' halloween you get in America! We had 3 trick or treaters all night!!
I was just wondering what program you made the collage in please?
Thanks for writing such an awesome blog, you've certainly inspired me to do better and be better (especially with healthy eating and keeping fit!)

  2. Oh my goodness; I love that Claire was Mitt Romney! It's so funny to see that mask on such a tiny person. What kind of young girl goes as the presidential candidate? A really awesome one! And Lucy looks so cute as a cat, too.

  3. Claire's Mitt Romney mask is the best!! And that's so cute about Lucy sharing her candy! She's the total opposite of the kids who cry on that Jimmy Kimmel video ("I told my kids I ate all their halloween candy" it's on youtube and hilarious, you should watch it!).

  4. Isn't it funny how the Daddy is never far away when Halloween candy is being sorted??? My husband says they have to pay the "Daddy Tax." I guess that's his cut for walking them around the neighborhood. I've been following your blog for several months now. Love it! Thanks for sharing with us.

  5. Ginger, I think that's Shawni's brother,Josh, surrounded by all the sweets. (candy). I expect Dave enjoyed some as well tho:)

I think that was lovely how Lucy gave other children her sweets. That really touched me.

Kailee, I've seen that video on YouTube & I agree it's so funny:)

I'm looking forward to hearing about your gratitude month. Thank you Shawni for the way you inspire us with your brill ideas:)

  6. argh! can we move to your neighborhood???? we have NO KIDS in ours, i think we had 9 trick or treaters the entire night (5 of which was a family from church that drove over to our house just to say hi). My kids are dying to have friends to play with instead of each other all the time. and i have WAY TOO MUCH left over halloween candy that never got passed out (and now i'm forced to consume it all myself) 🙂

  7. Hi Shawni, I am a frequent reader. I know you have a lot to do other than read comments, but I thought you'd heard this one out. As you are a well-traveled woman, I thought I could bring to your attention the cultural dissonance in Elle's costume as a "gangster." I'm a white woman from the suburbs and when I was in high school it was easy to see "gangsters" as a funny costume. But I don't anymore think it's the most respectful way to treat a real, living culture. (http://www.cnn.com/2011/10/26/living/halloween-ethnic-costumes/index.html) You have seen a lot of the world and you have mentioned before wishing your children could grow up around more diversity. Maybe choosing Halloween costumes can be a good place to start the discussion about respecting cultures.

Trying to keep this short for a comment but feel free to get in touch with me if you'd like to discuss further. Thanks.

PS: I like your blog and your thoughts on life. Hope you keep it up.
