Last Thursday we had a flood.

Bright and early one morning after scriptures I figured I’d be proactive about getting the tub ready for the girls.  I turned on the water and headed to the kitchen to work on our “thankful leaves” for the day (trying to add to this puppy each morning).

The girls and I got talking there in the thickness of the air that true gratitude brings when suddenly my whole body froze and my eyes flew open…

…Because I remembered the tub.

We ran and splashed right into the bathroom where about an inch of water was sloshing and seeping quickly into both girls’ bedrooms (it’s a jack & jill bathroom).

Now, at this point my mind went into freak-out mode.  It was racing trying to figure out who we know who would have a wet vac, how in the world to scoop up all that water as I called all hands on deck to gather every towel from the whole house and start sopping things up.

I was trying to figure out how we would replace all the already-bubbling baseboards and how to pull up the carpet and get fans drying it out, trying to call neighbors and friends who might have a wet vac. And as I came around the corner from grabbing towels from my room, I found Claire and Lucy kneeling in the hallway outside their room (Grace was already gone…missed all the action).

Those girls of mine were praying.

Praying that things would be ok.  And maybe that their mom would stop freaking out 🙂

And do you know what?  That sweet prayer offered up to Heaven worked.

No, the flood didn’t miraculously clear itself up, but everything seemed better after that.  My heart went from a hyperventilating mess to complete love.  And when a mom’s heart changes, I’ve realized it has a lot of power to change the air the fills up a home.  We all smiled, and worked, and even started to laugh.  Yes, something about that mass of multi-colored sopping-ness covering the bathroom floor became quite funny.

All because of a sincere prayer offered by two sweet girls.

How grateful I am for their example to me.

And that they realize to whom to turn in times of trouble.

  1. We think we will have kids and be their teacher. Kids teach us more than we can teach them. I never expected to learn so much as a mom.

  2. I'm so sorry about this! I've been there at Bear Lake but I didn't think about a prayer. DUH! I'm so grateful for your sweet helpers on earth and in heaven! 🙂
