Back in February Dave and I heard some great things about the movie “Hidden Figures.”  So we decided we’d better take our girls.
…which seems like a simple task, but it’s not, even when we have done our best to clear Monday nights for Family Home Evening.
But and we snuck them out anyway, and although we got home a little later than we hoped, we sure loved that movie.
As I looked down our row at them in that movie theater, the glow of the screen lighting up their faces, I felt such a deep love for them.
And for the fact that God sent me so many of them.
In a world where there is some confusion and discord about the power of women, how I hope these girls of mine can feel that divine spark within them, just as the women in that movie did.
I hope that as they grow, that they can care more about turning out, rather than turning in, that they can let those lights that are so bright within them shine out to make a difference in the world in their own unique way.  And that they can find joy in the exertion of that shining.
And I hope that they will know, that no matter what happens in life, God’s hand is always stretched out to them.  And that to Him, they are always enough.
I didn’t get the chance to listen to General Women’s Conference yet because I was away from Internet this last weekend, but I can’t wait to listen…hopefully for some of it, snuggled up with those beautiful girls of mine I adore.

  1. Oh man, Shawni. I seriously feel like this was written for me today (or at least Divine intervention that I read it). I'm not LDS, or even particularly religious, but this line literally made me choke up:

"And I hope that they will know, that no matter what happens in life, God's hand is always stretched out to them. And that to Him, they are always enough."

The last week has probably been the worst of my entire life, and I really really needed that reminder today. Thank you for sharing this story so eloquently. Your girls are so lucky to have such a warm and encouraging mom!

    1. I agree with Shelly…hugs to you 🙂 I'm sorry you've had such a bad week and in the theme of Shawni's post, hope your light and the light of others around you shine brightly while dealing with difficult times.

    2. RHrad that makes me so happy. It's interesting because at first I took that out, then put it back in right before I posted. No coincidences is right. Hope this week is better, sending out a prayer for you and lots of love. So sorry for whatever you are going through but God is there. And that hand really is stretched out. Forever.

I loved this movie too. It was heart breaking and empowering too.
I tell my girls often that there is so much good to do it the world. If that be through work, family, friends, be good, be light, be honest and hard working, be happy, be you, and most of all remember that your parents both here on earth and in heaven are cheering you on all the way.

  4. LOVE that Lucy has a book in her hand! I always had books on hand when I was little and being toted to big siblings' games and activities. I still love books, and my kids and nieces and nephews do too.
