Home school first day

first day

by Shawni
I personally think August first is a horrible day to start school.  But since I have no control over those dates (gosh dang it!), we went ahead and took that big day on.
It was a WEIRD day for me I have to say.  Weird because these are the lone two survivors of that large clan of five I used to send out on the first day:
Claire got picked up by her sweet friend who’s had her back since she was practically in Kindergarten:

…and I made our traditional first-day-of-school rainbow pancakes for Lucy.

…which was really weird to do for one child, (Dave had sent Claire off with a breakfast burrito earlier…we have some logistics to figure out with these two!), but this smile made it worth it:

(Lucy had the idea to mix the colors this year which I thought was pretty smart 🙂

Then it was off to junior high school.

I was so dang nervous but Lucy was taking it all in stride.  For one who does NOT want her picture taken lately, she was sure offering some good poses for me on her own accord!  Here’s her “7” for seventh grade:

She wanted to do the shape of a seven too 😉

And then it was off to join in that throng of kids en route to that first day, excitement and nerves pouring out of everyone.

(My own nerves were going crazy which I talked about in the last post HERE.)
But Lucy was smiley and happen enough that I was able to enjoy the fact that Max and Abby were in town.  Love that we got to hang with them…work out and then breakfast:

Here are some pictures Claire sent from school:

She came home with such glowing reports of the most fun day ever.  That always makes a mama happy.
I ventured out in this oven of a place to pick up Lu on the tandem not once, but twice (got the time mixed up) and was so so happy to see this smile:

We came home to cheers from everyone at home for that girl and her first big day.

Abby helped with our traditional post-school “Cookie Chat,” and I took this picture of these two together because I wished I had taken one the night before when Abby was helping outfit Claire. (Claire’s wearing all of Abby’s clothes…she happened to have the “perfect first-day-of-school” outfit according to Claire 🙂

Grace was also a huge helper to pump up Claire on that first day through WeChat from China:
Oh how I love sisters and how I miss that girl!
She had her own school going on, although it wasn’t her first day…that’s coming in September in Hawaii!

Nana dropped by for a visit:

We had our second real family dinner in forever and I decided that maybe this school thing isn’t so awful after all.

Lucy looks so grown up! Love her perseverance! Claire looks grown up too…driving off with her friends to school! I only have one left in school, so I understand what it’s like. Hang in there mama! Life has ebbs and flows..enjoy each second. More joy up ahead..more than you can ever imagine. Have faith in that.

Lucy is so tan. She must have spent a lot of time outdoors during the summer. Good for her! I love Claire's first day outfit.

Lucy is BEAUTIFUL than ever in these pictures! She's growing up! She is looking more like you actually! Such a gorgeous smile… Radiant!

Thank you. I agree, she radiates. She is trying so hard on every level this year it is such a beautiful thing to see. So grateful for these two girls we get to hang onto and spend so much additional time with.

Thank you for all the nice notes about Lucy…she really is growing up so much! She's gaining so much confidence through school and preparation and homework and hard work. I love it. I should have mentioned before that yes, she is super tan, which is a result of being in the sun a bunch, but also she's taking some medication for her syndrome that causes her skin get a little darker. Everyone is jealous of her tan, but probably not the shots she has to get each morning to get that tan! Ha! Anyway, thank you for the sweet comments and love.
