Sure, I was there. I mothered them, together perusing the overflowing school supply bins at the store, hushed their fears with soothing words and lunch dates here and there. I was there to buoy them up and write those initials of their talents on their fingertips when they needed it and help with their homework. But I certainly took for granted all that they navigated on their own.
Lucy had the whole schedule memorized in a matter of a half and hour and could lead us around with a hop in her step and a confident smile.
Oh how comforting that was!
We went back the next day so that Lucy could show Claire around, and Claire could give her any extra junior high tips. Lucy didn’t even look at her schedule. She knew she went from hallway G to A to F and back and she was just as confident as could be.
Sorry but we have to look at that smile a little closer too:

We were overjoyed as she spilled out all the grand details all the way home.
And got this greeting when we arrived:

Oh, Shawni, I could feel your rich mother's love pouring out in every word you wrote her. So glad Lucy's off to a great start. 7th grade is a super tricky time for lots of kids, of course, without the added challenges Lucy has. Personally, I think "normal" is overrated but I get that a girl her age craves it.
I was hanging on to your every word. Every mom can relate and cheer. So glad your daughter’s first day of Middle School went smoothly. Wishing her joy and for her to do joyful things.
💛🧡💛🧡💛🧡 What pluck Lucy has!!
I can relate to what your describing , except my first born has special needs. It still feels different for me to go to a teacher conference for my younger daughter and have it be all positive, with no issues to discuss, or for her to join a sports team or dance class and not fret over how it will go . You’re doing a great job working with others to get her the best help . Hope it continues to go smoothly.
My oldest starts kindergarten next week and he has some challenges with sensory processing and typical social behaviors. My stomach has been in knots praying for kind peers and vigilant teachers. Your post feels like sunshine. What a bold, vibrant girl you have there!!! 💛Thanks Shawni.
Oh, she looked so happy and confident in that video! This made me smile. She's such a cutie and you're an amazing mom. I'm glad the year is off to a good start.
So happy that this went to well for Lucy!
I stumbled upon this video today, and it make me think of you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3iiYT3Icso
Another Lucy, who also lost her vision. And the confidence that a kind person could give her! I made me tear up, and think of you and your Lucy <3
This video is lovely & choked me up. x
Lucy looks like she “grew up” overnight! So happy to hear that things are going well!
