Clear back on the first day of October Lucy had a birthday.

Birthday number fourteen, to be exact.

And while I still cannot believe my baby is that old and I miss that croc-wearing, spit-fire she used to be with all my heart, I am loving even more who she is becoming. I look up to this girl in so many ways. I wrote fourteen of the things I love about her back on the big day back HERE, but here’s what we did that day (instructed largely by the birthday girl herself who wrote an email to Claire at school and instructed her to make sure I was aware of her wishes and non-wishes…she knows how plan things I tell you! Yet she was surprisingly easy-going on her birthday, I was so proud of how mature she is getting! Ok, back to the story):

Started out with the traditional candy bar poster (of course):

Lucy is still on her 2020 no-desserts-or-candy-except-for-three-cheat-days-the-whole-year, which is very impressive to all of us. She chose her birthday as her second “cheat day” of the year so she was pretty excited about that candy on that poster. Although, I don’t think she actually ate hardly any of it after all…

Traditional bday breakfast:

We had decided last minute the night before to do a little scavenger hunt for her to find the “birthday basket” on the big morning, and that was a HIT I tell you! She loved it.

There were two things Lu did on her birthday that I thought were so, so sweet.

The first was that she took one of her candy bars from her candy bar poster and decided to give it to her “aide” at school along with a special little note. I’m not sure where that idea came from, but it was really touching to me because she has had a tricky time letting that “aide” actually help her…not wanting to be different from anyone else in her classes. Made me and Ms. Tracey both tear up a little:

We rode our bike to school just like normal, but with a couple helium balloons attached, which delighted Lucy:

Grace picked Lucy up from school and took her to lunch (above), and Claire was set to take her out for frozen yogurt after school, but the timing didn’t work out before volleyball so luckily Nana came to give her some birthday love and was able to accompany her to yogurt instead (along with her mama).

We had hot dogs and hamburgers as requested for dinner (she figured it would help us feel a little more like we were doing her birthday tradition of camping…good idea Lu). The fact that her friend was able to join us was a big plus too:

Dave was at Claire’s volleyball game for a little bit, but you can bet those two were home for the requested texas sheet cake and ice cream after Lucy’s night swim with her friend:

Ok and the second thing I thought was so sweet was that when were sitting down to play some games before bed Lucy looked up at me with concerned eyes and asked if I thought we should maybe invite Mike (our neighbor) to come join us (she knew his family was gone and he might be lonely).

So it was a card party with Mike and Josh too, she got some good FaceTime in with her married siblings who were so excited and filled up with adoration for her, and we wrapped her up in bed I think feeling quite filled to the brim with love…here we were waiting for her for prayers, along with Bo Jangles…ha!

Boy we got lucky with this one!

Love you forever, LuLu!

You are a light in this crazy world we live in right now. How cool is it to have a missionary praying with you at the end of your bed for your birthday? Grace is glowing 🙂 Your kids all are awesome!

  3. I noticed since the missionary thing that Grace is dressing way differently. Less fashionable dresses, no ripped up pants or jeans… can missionary girls wear normal clothes (pants)? Also those kindergarten shoes with socks…. is that also a missionary thing to show how modest and unworldly she is all of a sudden?

    1. The shoes and socks happen to be trendy these days ;)missionaries generally dress up a little nicer than your average 18-20 year old. The sister missionaries can wear nice pants but not jeans. And dresses/ skirts of course.

    2. What a snarky way to ask a personal question that really doesn’t rank an answer. You know how missionaries dress- you’ve seen them in the world and on this site. I’m annoyed that you felt safe mocking and expected a kind answer back.

      1. Actually I haven’t seen any girl missionaries and how they dress. At least not on this blog. Grace is obviously dressing differently. Seems a little hypocritical to me, that you transform like that because you are now a missionary. Maybe should have been dressing Mormon-like all along? I wondered if as soon as they get their calling, they have to modify their normal way of dress to be more “Mormon” looking. And on their “off” time, can they go back to the ripped jeans and the shirts that hang off the shoulders?

  4. Happy Birthday to Lucy! Looks like a fun day. I’m SO impressed with her discipline in avoiding sugar! So impressive!

  5. “You are a blessing to earth for me” – what a sweet and wonderful turn of phrase! Lucy is growing up beautifully!
