As I mentioned back HERE, Lucy is not a huge fan of changes.

In fact, she fights against them like nobody’s business.

Sometimes this is quite exhausting for her mother.

Now, I totally understand that change can make anyone anxious, especially if you’re dealing with diminishing eyesight. So I don’t fault her. And we laugh about it.

But still, it makes me tired.

So today when I pulled out Lucy’s new glasses that finally arrived (her other ones are so scratched and foggy I don’t know how anyone could see a thing out of those suckers), I got the expected response:

She didn’t like them.

Couldn’t she just wear her old ones for one more day?

They felt funny.

She couldn’t see out of the sides.

There was a glare.

They were too tight.

And on and on. You get the picture.

But I looked her in the eye and reminded her that she did NOT want the ones she was now begging to keep wearing when she first got them. They too felt funny. They too bugged her. And told her to please-with-all-my-heart-and-a-cherry-on-top give them a chance.

We rode our bike to school with some doubtful comments coming from that back seat.

And guess what? True to form, that girl came home glowing with happiness.

Would you believe those glasses worked out after all?

She could see just fine after all. And she actually quite liked them.

This deserved a commemorative picture:

So happy.

I love her.

  1. I’m with you Lucy new glasses are a big adjustment! I’m glad you fought through the weirdness of new glasses and came out triumphant. You rock!

    1. They look so cute on her! And for what it’s worth, I’ve been wearing glasses for 40 years and always want to just keep wearing my old pairs! It takes a minute to adjust…and usually being able to see better wins out 😅

  3. Shawni- This reminded me so much of myself. I wear a prosthetic for my amputated leg. In college, I grew out of my old, rather inadequate leg. It was literally holding me back! My parents flew me home to get fitted for a new one. We had the fitting rushed and everything.

A few weeks later my mother FLEW out to deliver my new leg to me. I refused to wear it for 6 months- out of fear. Imagine how upset my mother was! My old leg was literally destroying my leg it was so ill-fitting. Yet I continued to wear it because that’s what was easy.

Flash forward a few years, I got a new leg recently. My mother looked me in the eye (I’m 25 now) and said you are wearing this leg and fear (of change) is not even entering the equation. I’m a few weeks into my new leg and it has completely changed my life. I had no idea how much pain I was in, simply because I got used to it.

We all need moms with “encouragement” for us. Lucy will thank you one day!

    1. I love this, Meredith! Thank you so much for sharing that journey. I’m sending all kinds of love through the internet to your mother, she sounds like she rocks, and to you too! I’m so grateful for the science and expertise that makes things like new legs (and new glasses) possible. xoxo
