Welp, we have a brand new entrepreneur in our house.

For years Lucy has pined away to have a job. Her own job where she can make her own money.

Oh that desire for independence runs deep with this girl. And this quest for a job has been quite an emotional journey, for all of us.

There’s nothing better, of course, than a kid who is motivated to work and earn their own money. And Dave and I morph into glory mode when each of our kids have done the march into job mode.

But Lucy is a different story. Because it is no cakewalk to get a job when you can’t see well enough to do so many things. Things that are easy for sighted people to take for granted. There are lots of dead ends. This has been a struggle for a few years.

A Cookie Business

Lucy may not be able to see well enough to hold lots of different jobs she had her heart set on, but she does know her kitchen. She’s a determined chef and works so hard to learn how to bake and cook everything she can.

So, after much deliberation, Lucy decided to start her own cookie business. Meaning, she makes cookies for sale. I mean, why not start with what you know, right? Lucy has been a cookie baker from the start.

And she has learned over the years how to whip up some pretty tasty treats.

Back in November we sat down and made her flyer:

And she got to work.

This has not been easy, of course. Lucy starting a cookie business means I started a cookie business too. Ha! There are still so many things we’re trying to figure out (measuring vanilla and all the spices, still working on getting the bowl situated, the cookie boxes, etc.). She has a big job managing her mountains of homework and college applications alongside the cookies.

But she is doing it! And learning so much along the way.

She started out offering sugar cookies as one of her varieties:

But after one order she decided to take that one off the list lickety-split. Phew, those things take forever.

Anyway, thankfully she had a good lull in December for her finals and Christmas, but she’s ready to gear back up again. So hit her up for your cookie needs.

Good luck Miss Lu. Love you and your grit forever and ever.

      1. Hi Shawni,
Thank you for your reply & the link.

They look good but I don’t like coconut in any form, so won’t be giving them a go.

  3. Long time blog reader and love your family!! I live in the West valley but have to be in Gilbert and Mesa on Monday. If you message me your address I can check to see if it’s close enough for me to swing by! I would love to buy 1-2 dozen from Lucy.

    So excited for her!!

  4. That’s amazing! Way to go, Lu!! Does she have a food handlers training in order to legally sell from her business? Just in case anyone ever calls her out on it. I’m sure you’ve already thought of all things though. Excited to see her journey – good luck!

    1. Yes she does have a food handlers permit, and I love when she tells me little things while cooking in the kitchen that I did not know:)
      XOXO

      1. I love that! I remember getting mine in high school in order to sell stuff we’d made from our cooking tech class and it felt so cool 😎 Wish we lived closer to buy them!

  5. Way to go Lucy! My daughter started a cookie business when she was 13 and continued doing it until she left for college and then her mission. It was the best job and she loved using her creativity to come up with a cookie of the month and package them cute like you guys are doing. Good luck!!!
