The Beauty of Daily Ritual: Why What You Feed Each Day Matters

Last month I listened to this podcast that really resonated with me. Part of it was about a Divine Mother which was so interesting. But the thing that really caught me was after the introduction when they talked about rituals and the power they have to create us. It made me think about and want to examine further what my own rituals are each day. What am I feeding? What am I doing during any downtime? How am I spiritually creating my days?

I loved it so much that I decided to choose it for the topic of discussion for our Eyre fortnightly call, and loved talking about it with my parents and siblings who could make it that night.

They shared some interesting insight as well.

A few things resonated the most with me in this podcast:

Every day is a little microcosm of creation, like it begins together, falls apart, and then we bring it back together.

This is what got me thinking about messiness for my lesson a while back:

A diagram about messiness and moral agency

There is so much “messiness” to organize in life. Even every single day we wake up to “matter unorganized” that we have the agency to put together.

Every day a new beginning.

How powerful it is to think of our daily rituals as a way to deliberately choose what we want to focus on.

Which “wolf” we want to feed as the famous Cherokee parable reminds us: “The wolf that wins the internal battle is the one you feed the most.

There is such wisdom in starting our days with a ritual that plugs us into or dips us down to this stream that’s always flowing, whether that’s prayer, meditation, writing, a walk in nature, whatever it is that you can do to start your day, to begin that orientation towards what is real.

Rituals are a manifestation of what we really want.

I don’t have a lot more to say about that, but wanted to share since this has been on my mind so much lately.

Life has such a way of making us feel so hurried and frantic to get things done. To seize the day. And to be productive. But what if before any of that heart-racing business we take a step back and tune into our hearts?

What if we more carefully choose which wolf we are feeding?

Because there is so much more to life than scurrying around trying to keep up.

Especially when we take enough time to think about what we’re really doing. And create ritual to “dip ourselves into what is real” every day.

There’s something more, there’s something to wait for, there’s something that will require us to feel more pain and joy, but that holds the true reward. Where are we turning as we start our day?

That’s the question I’m sitting with lately. And I think when we really ponder and act on our own unique answers our lives can be so enriched.

  1. Would love to hear more about your daily rituals (and those of your parents & siblings) – how you chose the particular rituals, how your got started, and how you stick with them.

    1. I love this question. I think I’m probably the same as most, there are all kinds of versions of daily rituals that need to be re-worked all the time. So many things to improve on and so many different stages of life. I have LOVED that lately my sisters and I have been doing “deals” where we each tell each other some different rituals we specifically want to add into our lives. We do it a month at a time. The person who sticks with these rituals the most gets a pedicure or reflexology paid by from those of us who lost. It is a small little thing, but has been a good way to kick me in the bootie to get going on some things I really want to work on. I love the thought of atomic habits…it’s the little things that make such a big difference. So when I’m conscientious about the “little things” like prayer, scripture study, reaching out to someone new who I think may need extra love, etc., it seems like other things fall into place. I’ll have to post some of my charts with the little things I’ve been working on lately when I can get to that! I think it’s SO great to have someone to keep you accountable!

If you’re looking for a specific post, or overall things to think about that need habits and rituals to keep them on track, I do love our dream books as a way to keep track of things we all want to work on: https://71toes.com/new-years-resolutions-that-actually/
