Lucy, along with her parents:), did two college tours while we were in Utah for Fall Break.

There were angels touring Utah State University with us. Dave and I both felt them, and both got a little teary a couple times. From the fact that someone was playing the most gorgeous music on the grand piano in the student center (Lucy’s favorite) to our awesome tour guide to the gorgeous weather making the campus seem to sparkle, it couldn’t have been better orchestrated.

And then the disability specialist spoke right to Lucy rather than to us and explained things just how she loves explanations. I had met with him before and felt the same way I did that day.

He was magic, and Dave and I kept looking at each other across Lucy’s head with the looks that you give when hope starts to take root. We all left there with our hearts all swollen up. Well, I can’t actually speak for Lucy, because she keeps her college feelings to herself, but she was walking lighter and was pretty happy about the whole thing.

I know Lu will need to feel like she’s actually making a decision about college, not just taking the path of least resistance. She needed to have enough information that she could at least do a pros and cons list, and on no uncertain terms she has let us know over and over again that she will not be going to a college of any type here in the desert. So I felt really compelled to get her down to Provo to do a UVU tour as well. This was like prying off all our fingernails with a hacksaw for lack of a better explanation. Painful. That girl has an incredibly strong will (in case anyone wasn’t aware:), and boy howdy, it took all my might to talk her into doing that tour.

But we made it to UVU and that girl, with a renewed enthusiasm and mindset was the leader of the pack, following the guide with her cane, ready with questions.

We all emerged happy and calm. Lucy with more knowledge of what college is all about. And it was so fun that Grace joined us for the tour. AND we happened to run into Claire’s volleyball teammate we love so much. What are the chances??

Anyway, a little side-track right there, but there you have it, two Utah college tours that helped to get Lucy in-the-know about options and college. Those visits stirred up a lot of angst and scariness about the great unknown, but also gave us some hope to hold onto.

  2. Good luck to Lucy in this decision process! I’m so glad she had positive experiences with the tours, and especially with the disability specialist at UT state. I’ve had a lot of friends and family attend both schools and love them both.
