Lucy went to another high school dance. And this time around I realized that cousins make high school dances even better.

But before we get to all that jazz, let’s talk about how it felt leading up to this one.

Since this was her third dance, my mama-heart calmed down just a tad. I mean, she sort of knows the lay of the land a little better by now. She knows what she’s getting into. And I know her friends are golden who invite her into their dance groups. I have even been lucky enough to know that each kid she has asked (these are all girls’ choice dances so she has done the asking, MORP, Winter Formal, and this years MORP) has been exceptionally kind.

How does a girl get so lucky to have not one but THREE exceptionally kind and patient and graciously polite dates?

Well, she has relied on her friends to make suggestions and she trusts they will be awesome.

And they are.

As I mentioned, I was all fine and dandy with this latest one coming up. The one called “MORP” which is “prom” spelled backwards…a dance with a bit of a casual twist with a “theme.” That is, I was fine until a couple days before when my heart started seizing up in waves.

How would it really go? Would she really be ok? But then the reassurance that really, and truly there are angels all around. She was going to be ok.

And she was.

Cousins Make School Dances Even Better

One of those angels came in the form of Lucy’s cousin Lyla who came to double-date with Lucy and her group for MORP. Seriously how fun is that? Lucy had asked that nice guy, and when her cousin decided to join in, that nice guy suggested a friend for Lucy to ask for Lyla.

And once again, really, how fun is that?

She came to town late Valentine’s night right as Lucy and the last of her friends were finishing up their “Galentine” night.

It was so fun to help these girls get ready to go.

The MORP “theme”

The theme for MORP was “Western” so these girls morphed themselves into some pretty cute Western beauties.

They didn’t have a ride and I was the photographer last minute.

Lucy was appalled at even the idea that I could be their driver at least out to this crazy photo location their group wanted with her and Lyla and their dates. But Lyla made her realize this actually would not, in fact, be the end of the world. Ha!

And it wasn’t. It was actually awesome.

My friend came along in the front seat with me (I promised Lu I wouldn’t talk to them and just talk to my friend) and it melted my heart to overhear snippets of those girls back there getting to know their dates. They are both such good conversationalists!

Then the whole group arrived…

…there were LOTS of them!

And they all looked so cute.

Gosh, dances are so fun.

The boys wanted to be sure the cactus was part of their group:

It was just so much fun to have these cute cousins glowing there amidst that big group. And their cute dates too. And just to be in the middle of all that high school energy.

After pictures they were on their own (Lucy’s date drove) so Dave and I took off for a game night with our friends. Me feeling just so grateful.

Lu and Lyla got home while we were still up and came and sat on our bed and spilled out all the details. I loved it so much, so fun to have Lyla there who had taken videos and shared her thoughts on our high school dances compared to hers.

Lucy was in heaven to be together and seriously, there are angels all around.

Other High School Dance MORP Dates Through the Years:

  • MORP and how much fun teenagers are after we returned from living in China
  • MORP 2016 – theme was “careers”
  • MORP 2018 -theme was “iconic duos”
  • I know there are a few “MORP” posts for Claire, but I can’t find them right now. Bottom line, high school dances are fun and I can’t believe we’re at the end!

  1. What a great experience. She’s having a great senior year.

What will happen when she goes to college? Are you planning on living close by ? I have a feeling you are hoping she’ll go to Utah and you’ll live close by??

  2. I love that Lucy was wearing the cowboy boots!! I think I remember you saying that she was very wedded to the Chaco sandals, so great to see her coming out of her comfort zone with that. So amazing to see her glow-up and watch her thrive!

  3. I’m not a mom yet, but I’ve been a teenager, and the “I’ll bring a friend along and only talk to her” strategy is pretty brilliant. 🙂
