Yep, Dave’s birthday rolled around the very day after all the hoopla of the Turkey Trot and Thanksgiving.

Not to get cheesy (he’s not a fan of that), but each year we grow older I become more and more in awe that I get to be married to him.

He sees the big picture of the world, “gets” my crazy ideas and loves me anyway, he’s the best protector and “coach” to his kids (fitting that we call him “coach” for his grandpa name).

He knows how to work hard, and also how to let loose and have a good time.

He prioritizes things that are most important, and he is always the first to say he’s sorry. Even when it’s my fault.

He is responsible. He loves people. He has a rough exterior sometimes, but his heart is soft and so empathetic. I could go on and on, but that’s not what he would want so let’s just sum up what we did on the big day.

Because best birthday gift to him: we had (almost) all the kids home to celebrate that guy.

How lucky is that??

We went to hot yoga first thing, because he’s a big hot yoga fan.

As are the rest of us…except for Lucy who opted to sleep…and Murphy with a babysitter too.

We came home for birthday breakfast and gifts:

I love these blurry outtakes of a video I took, because those smiles…

Lucy wrote out her traditional Braille birthday note on a new program on her computer and we couldn’t get it to print, so here it is as presented on the computer:

We got to see the new movie Wicked.

Which deserves a whole post of it’s own. Elle, Grace and Lucy had seen it already and could hardly wait to see it together. And I was in tears with loving those messages as we all hugged up after it was over. So much goodness and things to think about in that show. I talk about part of it on our new “In the Arena” podcast that will be aired next week. As for the birthday boy, well, he took a few little naps in that dark theater. Ha! But was entertained while he was awake.

We went to dinner filled with everyone telling Dave all the things we love about him. So much to love about that man who is ours.

Back home for a little poker night, joined by our missionary for a few minutes to wish Dave a happy birthday.

And cake and ice cream too.

It was a good day for a celebration.

Love that man forever.

  1. Honest question!

Do you ever just chill out and binge watch Netflix, or eat crap and sleep in? It just seems like every second has to be filled right a planned activity. Just wondering.

    1. I’m sure everyone has those days, but they’re not going to be the most important or interesting memories to document for themselves or their children, so they stay off the internet. Not sure if Shawni has done a podcast episode on this (and if not it would be a good one!), but social media is just highlights and it can be easy to think people’s lives are fully reflected in the ~10% we actually see. That being said, they do seem to be a more socially active and schedule-oriented family, but again, we only see a small sliver and not the whole picture. I’m sure there’s also the added need to schedule when you have so many siblings and in laws etc. or else you’ll never see each other! “A day in my life” could be a great blog post, too!

    2. Ha! I love this question, Sammy. And thank you for sharing your thoughts too, SJ! Grace sent this question to our family group text with a laughing emoji because it is kind of a joke how on the run we are sometimes. I’m working on the chilling out part, and actually have a goal to watch more tv (ha!) but SJ is right, I don’t document many of the slower parts of life. But I wish there were more of them!
      XOXO
