Finding Comfort Through Music at College

There is not a day that goes by that I don’t sit in wonder that Lucy is doing what she is doing up at college. This is for sure no cakewalk for this girl. Which makes me admire her even more. Oh there are so many obstacles and trenches to get caught in when you are trying to maneuver college with special needs. One of the biggest ones looming right now is loneliness. But recently she has found some comfort through music at college, and I’m so grateful for this bit of salve in hard times.

Lonely Days at College

I know so many college kids deal with loneliness. That is for sure a heart-breaker, for the college kid as well as for their mama. So I’m sending out so much love for any mamas of college kids reading this who get teary every time they think of that child so far away. And alone in their dorm room day after day. Praying for angels to continue to show up for all of our kids. Also for us and those kids of ours to recognize those angels. There is one in particular who has shown up for Lucy and included her in so much and I’m just so grateful.

There are also angels in Dave’s sister as well as mine, and her daughter, who recently showed up right there on campus just when Lucy needed a boost the very most.

Oh how I love them!

Finding Comfort Through Music

At home Lucy has a little whiteboard in her bedroom that she has always written on from time to time giving herself a little extra motivation and self-love. Her messages melt my heart.

The last thing she wrote on it before she left for college, and that is still on that whiteboard, is that music makes her feel loved. And boy, is she ever right about that. Playing the piano is perhaps her biggest soother and equalizer in life. Mine too when she plays at home.

Her latest music quest is guitar. She decided to a take guitar class this semester, signed up for lessons. She used her best resources to try to rend a guitar. When those came to dead ends even with my help, she determined that she’d purchase her own. That was a journey in and of itself. As I worked with this super nice guy on Facebook Marketplace to figure out those logistics and helped Lucy find a ride to pick it up, my heart just ached so heavy that she can’t do this herself. Hers was aching too, I know.

But oh, she was SO happy to go pick it up with the help of another few angels. Her face was glowing as she showed me that beautiful thing on FaceTime and we tried to figure out, together, how to situate that guitar in the corner just so, so it wouldn’t get hurt before her case arrived. That in and of itself is difficult since it’s tough for her to know how to point the camera to show me. Which made my heart heavy.

But that smile on her face? So much hope in tandem with the worry, hope winning out.

She has now finished two guitar classes and has had pretty glowing reports.

GO LUCY! Keep that love of music going strong, it’s such a beautiful gift!

  3. Hi sweet Shawni!
We are in Puerto Rico and ran into one of your sweet nephews serving there. I usually reach out to missionary moms to let them know what a great job their sons are doing, but he zipped out before I could catch him. He and his companion were so helpful getting headsets ready and situated for our kids. I was so impressed with them. Would you please let his parents know? So grateful for incredible missionary examples for my kids to interact with.
