You and all your family seem to eat so healthy. Have you ever thought of putting together a cookbook with healthy recipes, and ideas to get children to eat healthier? I know you have had to implement this way more due to BBS. The proceeds from the cookbook could support BBS and be a help to other families!

This is a great idea and something my sisters and I have thought about quite a lot (not the BBS part, just the recipe part, but I love the BBS idea, need to get going on that…).  I love to try new recipes and have found some great ones here in China but when it comes to healthy my sister Saren is the pro.  She has a knack for creating delicious healthy stuff and her kids eat every bite right up.  I love discussing new ways to incorporate better foods into our family’s diet with her because she does it so naturally.  She and her business partner April have this new deal they are doing to incorporate more veggies into everything they feed their families and I love it.  Check out her first little overview of what she is doing and some great recipes HERE.

This next question is from my Dad for blog readers.  He and my mom are trying a new parenting thing I want to help share.  They are never-ending in support of helping families and I love it.

Will you [blog readers] help us beta test a new idea for a youtube channel?
The idea for the channel is based on the assumption that most of today’s busy parents don’t always have time to read lengthy parenting books or marriage manuals.  What they want is candid, bite-size ideas that will make a difference in their family relationships and in the behavior of their kids.
Before we make this channel known to the public, we thought we might ask readers of our families’ blogs to take a “first look” and to submit suggestions and inputs.
Again, the goal is to make available some quick (and proven) “recipes” for parenting and marriage relationships that viewers will want to try out in their own families.
Since we travel so much, we will film these brief video podcasts from various locations, which we hope will create additional interest.
Please take a look at www.youtube.com/user/eyresontheroad and let us know what you think (by sending a comment on this blog post)

Here’s one about Jesus and Santa at Christmas that pertains so much to this time of year:

  1. I think it is a great idea. Loved watching the video. This will make it easy sharing ideas with family and friends on Facebook or other social media. Plus I love getting to see people's personalities and interactions which you can't get from a book. In saying that I do have quite a few of your parents books and love them!!!!

One question, is there a way to subscribe to the videos so you get an email when one is uploaded?

  2. I really loved the content of the video, but they should definitely NOT film "selfie"-style. Even if they're filming from an iPhone and want their videos to be quick and casual, they should have the camera farther away and STILL.

  3. i cannot tell you how much that video enriched my life. i am so thankful that you posted that. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to you and your parents for your dedication to strengthening families. if you only touch one person and its me- then please know its worth it. but i know you touch so many more lives than mine. God bless you all!

  4. This is just what I need. I have a stack of your parents' books and the best intentions to read them but no time. I would really enjoy this video option.

  5. I love it. I think it's a great idea. I was listening to the joy school CD s today in the car and hearing your parents speak is so different than reading a book. I think that why enjoy your sister's podcast because its relatable practical and easy to listen to while I clean my house.

  6. I love it too! What a wonderful thing for your parents to do! My 9-year-old is pretty sure he has "figured out" who Santa really is. He's kind of at that age where he's figured out the truth of Santa, but at the same time, I can tell he's trying not to be disappointed that some of that "magic" might slip away 🙂 I think this will help tremendously. Thank you! I hope you do continue these little snippets. They are perfect!

  7. I really like this idea! I have a 9 month old and not much time to read (or remember) books. However one piece of advice I have after looking on the youtube channel is to change the titles of the videos to better inform people which ones are parenting/marriage advice, and which ones are simply videos of your family.

  8. I love this! You have to accept it for what it is.. little blurbs of info, not a formal video presentation. I think it's great how they have found ways to teach lessons through everyday things.. not matter where they are! Whether it's a sled ride, a trip to the zoo or just eating jello with the grandkids! It incorporates daily examples and impromptu interviews.. not staged or rehearsed interviews. Who cares if the videography is not perfectly centered (or still).. it's the message that is most important, really. Also, I would LOVE to be able to subscribe to this channel, so updates come to my inbox. I will never remember to check the site for more little snippets. I love that they are trying every way to get into parents homes and help us be better! The next generation is only going to benefit from this.
Our family specifically is going to incorporate the Jesus on Christmas Eve and Santa on Christmas day idea.. we've been wanting to do this, but didn't know how to do it. The timing of it is perfect for my little 8 year old as well.. who has "figured it out" but doesn't want to admit it, since he thinks he won't get any presents if he does.

  9. I love this idea. I recently discovered your parents books (I actually discovered them by reading your blog!) and I've been wishing they had a podcast of something similar since I have an 8 month old baby and not a lot of time to sit down and read for long stretches of time. A youtube channel with small amounts of information in each video is perfect! I also love the idea of some kind of subscription/alert so we can know when new videos are added.

  10. Thanks for all of these great comments! We love doing this type of little videos–imperfect and impromptu–just to make a point. We think of them as parenting or marriage "recipes" that you can try out to see if they taste good and if you like them. Often better than a big book to read in the very, very busy world of young parents. I think you can subscribe to the channel and net notified each time we do a new one.
Thanks Shawni, for sharing this with your readers. Love, Mom and Dad

  11. i've already subscribed! such a great idea to have an explanation of what has worked for them along with examples! they are an inspiration! you too! thanks so much!

  12. Love love love it! I'm already planning to "give Christmas Eve to Jesus". What a fantastic idea.
I agree 100% that parents (and everyone else) are reading less all the time, and this is a GREAT way to share ideas and thoughts in a real-life way. I, personally, love seeing your mom and dad being candid and casual. I joined their valuesparenting website like 7 or 8 years ago, and it's so fun to actually SEE them. Like I get to go to one of their presentations, a little piece at a time
    Love it!

  13. I would definitely watch them. I don't have any kids yet but I read your blog on a consistent basis making notes about your parenting styles and ideas. I would definitely subscribe to any parenting advice from your family.

  14. Loved, loved, loved the video. Everything about it. I actually like that it was shot "selfie" style because it made me feel like I knew them personally and almost as if I was watching a video of my own parents. I would subscribe to their channel
    For sure!

  15. I think the idea is great, and your parents have a lot of wonderful things to share. However, I didn't like the video style, and I think it needed further editing to trim it down.

  16. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this idea! I HAVE read all your books since I have heard about you when you were on Oprah in 91 or 92! I was more interested in your daily family life and so glad I found your book 3 Steps to a Strong Family after I moved from Eastern Oregon to Boise, ID in 96. I made posters and implemented the 5 family rules, family economy, and family traditions which I already had a ton of!
The funny thing is that I always felt as part of your generation since I was raising children and started young, yet I am only a year or so older than Saren! Now I have grown children, grandchildren, AND a 6 1/2 yr old son. Now I feel as though I relate to your daughters blogs AND your blog and books! I sort of did things backwards. I am now in college and working towards my RN. Thank you for the wonderful parenting advice – and especially the repenting bench!
By the way, I grew up in Eastern Oregon and am fascinated by your log house adventure. What made you decide on the Blue Mountains? I know my way from LA Grande to Ukiah, Dale, Long Creek , and all the way around to John Day. (And Pendleton and Pilot Rock) I swam and fished in the John Day River last summer.
I actually grew up in Wallowa County and my family were homesteaders from the Oregon Trail. Have you ever seen the Wallowa Mountains and Wallowa Lake? A trip you should take.
I hope to see more of your you tube blogs and would love to hear back on your adventures in the Blue Mountains! You are an inspiration to me since I didn't get that example from my parents.

  17. I've never done the youtube subscribing channels but would definitely on this one. As a mom I have time to look on pinterest and blogs and glean great parenting info from here and there. My husband is in school still and that's just not what he chooses to do in his spare time which is fine, we both have different interests. But while watching the intro video and santa v Jesus video he stopped his studies for just a few minutes and watched with me genuinely interested and listening without me saying "hey you should watch this parenting video with me" or me saying "hey, this is what I learned from this parenting article/book I read". So YES I love this because both spouses can sit down for a quick listen and be on the same peg about improving their parenting and relationship! Loving it Eyres!

  18. What a great idea! I love the informal setting and your younger actors. Thank you for helping us parents continually improve. This format is perfect for times when you need some words of wisdom and don't have enough time to read a whole book. Thank you!

  19. I really love the YouTube video channel and would definitely benefit from watching and learning. I'm really inspired by the Bethlehem dinner idea.

  20. YES! I don't feel that I have time to read lots of parenting books, but I love good, tried & true ideas. And I adore your cute parents.

  21. The videos are a fabulous idea (just got sucked into watching a couple when I'd only intended a quick peek! LOL). I absolutely adore your parents. Your Dad sent me a wonderful email a while ago after a comment I'd made on your blog. So wonderful that they take time to engage with people. I love their focus on family. Inspires me to do better with my own.

  22. I agree…sometimes finding the time to read takes a back seat. I think this is a great idea and I will definitely be tuning in. Tell your parents thank you from me….so glad they are willing to share their wisdom.

  23. I loved the link to Saren's blog. She really has some terrific ideas on eating healthy! Her pictures are beautiful too. Sometimes when people take photos of even really great food, it doesn't look that good. Saren is right on. I am excited to try some of her recipes! Thank you Saren!

  24. OK Everybody, you have convinced us! You can now subscribe to youtube/eyresontheroad.
Thanks for the great comments and encouragement. Watch the channel in the next few days and weeks as we update and improve!
Love you all, Linda and Rick (Shawni's proud parents(

  25. I grew up with Joyschool and have now read and used many of the Eyre's books with my 4 kids through the years. I really enjoyed the content of the video and beyond that enjoyed the personal feel of it, the everyday lessons:) Subscribed!

  26. Parenting has not seemed to come very naturally for me and I struggle a lot! Reading books actually almost paralyzes me because I get overwhelmed with so much content. Your video format will be perfect – one thing at a time. I love the little snippets Shawni shares on her blog of things you did for your family when they were young and I look forward to hearing your ideas from you through your videos.

  27. "We're doing a selfie!" Your parents are adorable! I came here because I'm having major parenting anxiety about one of my children right now, and you and your parents have been such a great source of inspiration for me over the years. I'm excited to check out the new YouTube channel!
