Gosh time is just flying on by around here. We tried on this get-up for Lucy the other day and it started getting more real. Whoa.

Blurb Books
I’m in the midst of trying to get my Blurb books situated before the Black Friday Blurb book sale, and it’s made me realize how GRATEFUL I am for this record of family life.

I’m going to be switching some things up over here in the new year, (more on that coming soon). But for now, let’s look at life lately according to my iPhone. I have an “October Little Things” coming this week too.
I already talked about our household jobs (Saturday chores) we’re trying to keep up with. But here are some other things going on around here.
Game Nights
Love when we gather with Dave’s pickleball friends and their wives for game nights. It has become a tradition to take turns hosting dinner and games and I sure love these people.

When you live in this area, church congregations (or “wards”) change all the time. They are divided and realigned to take in the growth. I hate change, and miss terribly all the people we’ve been “split up” from through the years, but thankfully we can still get together to catch up.

We’ve all been through so many ups and downs since we were all raising our little babies on the same two streets.
Dottie’s Birthday
We got to gather with extended family to celebrate my niece’s baby who passed away last year. Love this family with all our hearts and so grateful they gathered so we could love on them all.

I think God put on a beautiful sunset for her.

Salad Group
It was my turn for our “salad group” again…yikes that is a lot of work!

But oh so worth it when you get those puppies delivered to your door three days per week!
I made this salad.
Eyre Stuff
The Eyre Sisters Podcast (In the Arena) is back at it again:

Also our “fortnightly discussions:”

Everyone looks SO excited, right? Ha! But really, we have some great discussions and man, I love them.
BrainFood
Also, BrainFood is going strong. I deliver once a month and I sure love this organization.

Turkey Trot Prep
Turkey Trot prep is going strong…this crew that I call the “Dream Team” is ready.

We have record numbers signed up again this year, this thing just keeps on growing! But man, these guys know how to do it! Dave is very interested in our t-shirt color for Families Fighting Blindness as you can see.

Ha! He’s got enough on his plate with all the logistics.
Come Follow Me
As Lucy is getting closer to graduation I’ve been pondering lots. Have we done enough to help tether our kids to God? I love all the things we have done including Family Home Evening and “Fasting Club” and Family testimony meetings and of course, church and scripture study. But as we get to the end of our child-rearing-in-the-home days I do stop and wonder, could we have done more? I know I shouldn’t go down that route, because of course we can’t do it all. But I asked Lucy if she remembered when we did a “speed read” of the Book of Mormon and she had no clue. Will they remember anything from all these things we’ve worked to infuse into their hearts? Maybe not. But I hope the feeling in our home makes them know how loved they are, always. By us and also by God.
Long digression to say, we’re upping our game in the Come Follow Me department and Lucy actually seems there for it. We do great listening to the We Believe devotional each morning as I do Lucy’s hair, but I’ve had this feeling we really need to open up and read the actual scriptures more alongside those devotionals. That has created some pretty great discussions.

Speaking of Lucy…
This girl is one in a million. She is full of grit and determination and has some news to share of the things she’s been doing lately but I have to get permission before I share that stuff. For now, let’s just say she is kind:

Always writing colorful notes for people for their birthdays, and remembering them. Even a candy bar poster here and there (her personal favorite):

She can FEEL sunsets in her bones:

She was determined to ask someone to Winter Formal. So she got some friends to give her suggestions about who to ask, got busy whipping up a poster:

(This was right before Halloween…hence the “die” part:)
And asked this boy she doesn’t know from Adam. I thought it was so sweet what he wrote back to her later that night:

She knows how to weave her way into games any way she can…can you see her in there amidst our friends?

She is SUCH a hard worker on all her homework (and college applications that are killing us right now!)

And we finally, after over a year, finished this book she adores about the founders of her choir:

We don’t get as much time to read together these days due to the mountains of homework, but these times we get to spend together are pretty special.
She’s always looking for new book suggestions so send some along if anyone has any grand ideas.
Ok, so much else swirling around in my heart, but there you go for now. Hope everyone has had a great Monday.
XOXO

I read this essay when it came out and thought of Lucy (longtime reader!).
https://www.newyorker.com/culture/the-weekend-essay/how-to-be-blind
It’s excerpted from a memoir, by a writer who lost his sight as a young adult.
I can’t get in because I’m not a subscriber but I have read this before. I love to hear how different people cope with vision loss, which is all just so unique! Thank you so much for sending this and thinking of Lucy.

Hi Shawni! It has been such a privilege keeping up with this blog and I’m wishing you and your family well in such a stressful and exciting season of change.
My church is reading Advent in Narnia this year in advance of Christmas & I thought of your family’s special relationship with C.S. Lewis (like my own family’s!)
It’s a collection of daily meditations in manageable pieces that might be the right fit for really busy schedules:

Oh I’m so glad you told me about this, it looks so good! Right down Lucy’s alley too! THANK YOU!

What genres does Lucy like? We just loved Ina Garten and Kelly Bishop’s recent memoirs but they may be a touch mature for high school. Both books could be wonderful to read with your girlfriends or older daughters though, as they inspire such interesting and thought provoking conversations. I found them to be especially engaging as audiobooks, so you can hear these women tell the fascinating stories of their lives.
Excited to see everyone else’s suggestions and find new books to read!
Thank you for these suggestions. I will look them up with Lucy and see if she buys in. She is so particular! Thanks so much!

I have Luke’s picks from Reese Witherspoons book club, and she has a Young Adult book club too which looks like it could be interesting! Does Lucy like audiobooks?

Longtime reader. I adore your blog. I just come away inspired and happy. I know we all have problems. I just love your honesty and sharing. We have 3 adult children and they are not close. Our family is fractured and it hurts my husband. I love that you speak to “deep talk”….. I have never experienced this with our children. Your family is beautiful. I hope with your “change” in coming year with your blog that you will still post and share. Your blog really is the bright spot in my day.
Thank you so very much.
Oh thank you for this sweet note, Cindy, and I’m so sorry to hear your family is fractured. I don’t know any of the details, but want to remind you of my mom’s wise words, “life is long.” I hope that some day, through lots of love, your family will become reconciled somehow. Sending lots of love.
XOXO
