Hi, this is Max.  I’m hijacking my mom’s blog today to explain about my Eagle Project that I’m working on right now.

We are going to India this summer to work at a school for kids whose parents are affected with leprosy.  They wouldn’t get an opportunity to get an education without this school because they would have no other choice than to beg on the streets.  The school is called Rising Star and we are extra excited to go there because we have been sponsoring a boy who goes there named Krisnamoorthy for the last two years.
(Rising Star sent us that picture after we sent him our Christmas card last year.)  I am really excited that we will get to meet him (my mom wrote about him here).

I decided since we’re going there to do my Eagle project to help the kids there.  We have talked to the lady who is over the education at the school and have learned that they really need books for early readers (they are requesting “Magic Tree House” books because they help the kids learn English and are very entertaining) so a big part of my project is making phonics flashcards for the kids and collecting book donations.  I have collected a lot of them, but we are still hoping to buy more books when we get to India and are asking people to donate money to help us get their library stocked up ($5 per book, we will purchase them in India to hopefully help their economy over there).

part of the requirements for our trip I am also supposed to get support
from others to help donate to the general funds of the school.  Each
volunteer is supposed to raise $500-$1,000.  I have already raised some
money, but my family and I would love your support (and a lot of people have asked if they can help).  Because we are
going to volunteer there, we are becoming partners with Rising Star.
Any donations you make will make you a partner in helping this school to
keep helping the kids that go there.

If you would like to help by making a donation (even $5 will help), here are the instructions:

  • go to www.risingstaroutreach.org
  • click on DONATE then DONATE NOW
  • click on OTHER GIFT OR EVENT and fill out your information
  • Gift Designation will be GENERAL FUND
  • **In the comments box write MAX POTHIER
  • What prompted this gift? VOLUNTEER PROGRAM.

That way they will know to designate any money you donate toward what our family will be doing there.  Any amount will
really help these kids have a better future.

Thank you for your help.
From, Max

  1. Good Morning,
Although I don't personally know your family and you all don't know me, I have donated a little bit of money to help you reach your goal. I live in NC and my sister has travelled to different countries (currently in Malaysia), working at internataional schools. I hear her stories about the lack of education in other parts of the world due to lack of funds, so I am hoping that my donation helped a little bit. Enjoy your trip! I just got back from visiting my sister in Malaysia and it was quite the experience!

  2. I think this is such a great idea! My question, though, is how you are able to use a project in another country as your Eagle project? I thought part of the requirements for an Eagle project was that it be done in one's own community? That's the way it's been for my boys, anyway. Still, it sounds like it will be an amazing adventure for you and your whole family! Can't wait to read about it!

  3. Max – Absolutely! Off to donate now! Love that you all are excited about your impending trip! And who doesn't love the Magic Tree House books?! =)

  4. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to do this. I thoroughly enjoy your mother's blog and find you all very inspiring 🙂

  5. My six year old daughter had a lemonade stand and when I told her about you, she instantly wanted to give you her earnings.

We love what you are doing and included a link to this post on our blog to hopefully get you some more funds.

    Have a safe trip!

  6. LOVE that you are doing this!! I'm so excited that you will have such an amazing experience. I will be donating. With being a teacher…nothing makes me more happy than seeing kids exposed to reading. Thanks for asking.

  7. Max,

Thanks so much for sharing this with us….both of my girls just donated all of their "give it" money from their allowance! I double their money and they are so excited for you to be able to buy 10 books for the kids.

Good luck on your Eagle Project ans safe travels to you and your family!

  8. Hi Max,
Our family is happy to help you in this great project! And because of what your mom wrote we've been sponsoring a rising star child for over a year. His name is Naresh. Maybe you can tell him we said "Hi and we love you," while you're there.
