The Resilience of Motherhood and the Pietà

I’m catching the last hours of Mother’s Day in the States to share an experience I had on Mother’s Day at the Vatican this year, hours ahead of the states. You see, somehow through the inner workings of luck and providence, Dave and I were on a long layover in Rome this morning. We went to St. Peter’s Basilica for mass, and were able to stand right in front of the Pietà, one of Michelangelos most awe-inspiring creations. And one that reminded me of the beauty of resilience in motherhood today.

The Pietà and the Resilience of Motherhood

I love it because it was carved when he was 24, I love the details, I love the subject matter. But most importantly I love that it depicts the beauty of a strong mother. One made stronger through the fires of motherhood that have come her way.

I thought about the sorrow, tenderness, sacrifice, and strength woven into motherhood from the very beginning.

As I stood there marveling I couldn’t help but get a little teary thinking of all the strong motherhood figures in my life. People who have mothered me through the impossible, and people who are the most amazing examples of those tho nurture and remind people that they indeed matter.

And people who, like Mary, are so full of love and strength and faith. And who also, like Mary, have had their own fair share of motherhood trials.

I thought too about how motherhood never really ends, even as our children grow up and spread their wings to fly. We keep wrapping our love around them in new ways through every stage.

I’m so grateful for so many good examples in my life through so many stages of motherhood. Just feeling so grateful I get to be in this motherhood journey with each them. And you wonderful mother blog readers too!

Sending out so much love this Mother’s Day to all those who are using their hearts and their strength to mother those around them with resilience.
XOXO
