Why the 2025–2026 Utah Ski Season Wasn’t a Bust for Our Family

Some may call the Utah ski season 2025-2026 a bust. I mean, it may be the season with the least snow on record from the beginning of recording beginnings.

But I have to say, it gave our family some pretty great memories.

Between Christmas, MLK weekend, and President’s Day, made the best of what little snow we had this year.

Would we have been head-over-heels with more snow? You bet. Some day we’ll get back to a season like our favorite ski season in 2023. But this is how ski season in Utah went for our family this year.

Christmas Skiing in Utah with Family

One of our big Christmas gifts for our kids was skiing in Utah. It has been for a few years, because skiing is in Dave’s blood. His love of that sport was passed down from his dad, who was a race skier. And has now been planted quite firmly in the hearts of the majority of our children.

The snow was bleak, that’s for sure (first picture). But we sure found enough snow to make ourselves comfortable (second picture).

And there’s nothing quite like being on the slopes with your family. The conversations that ensue on the lifts or waiting on the hills are my favorite. Yes, Christmas family skiing was good.

And we cannot forget this highlight of the 2025-2026 ski season: Murphy strapped on skis for the first time.

I mean, if only one thing happened to make this ski season successful, seeing your grand-daughter with the teensiest little snow boots did it for me. Watching her glide in glee to her parents and aunts on the bunny hill was perhaps my whole ski season highlight.

MLK Weekend Ski Trip in Utah

As luck would have it, all the pieces came together to meet up in Utah again for the MLK Day three-day-weekend.

Claire missed this gathering because she was on a birthday trip, and Lucy, sadly, felt like she just couldn’t make it. (We sure tried.)

But we celebrated wrapping up three couples (Grace’s boyfriend included, plus Carson’s mom one night). Oh I love when we’re all together, but there’s something pretty magic about smaller groups.

We all have endless delight in those little girls, Murph and Ada, and Max and Abby are so good about jumping at the chance to load them and all their paraphernalia up and join us in the mountains. Oh I love them for that.

There were only six of us on the mountain (Abby and Dave took turns one morning, and Noah didn’t have a ski pass), but we did our best on those snowless hills. I can follow my people down every mountain but sometimes it sure doesn’t look pretty. I am sometimes frustrated at that, but then I remember I’m old and can almost keep up!

We tried the brand new gondola, filled up a whole row of comfy seats at church with our ragamuffin crew and walked Main Street on a double date with Elle and Carson after the others left.

I took Elle and Carson to the airport bright and early on Monday (they were the last ones standing), and came back to join our friends and Dave on the slopes for a few runs.

President’s Day Skiing in Utah

We also got to meet up in Utah for the three-day weekend of President’s Day. I already posted about skiing with all our adult kids on Valentine’s Day. It was another precious opportunity for togetherness.

This time everyone was there, including babies and boyfriends.

A Surprise Snowstorm: The Best Weekend of the Season

And THEN, if that wasn’t enough good skiing, a huge storm hit at the exact weekend where Dave and his friends were praying it would. You see, these guys get together every year to ski and reconnect.

It was amazing that the biggest snow of the season happened to hit right at the moment they were hoping. I wish I could have been with them whooping and hollering down those hills with all that fresh snow!

Maybe the Utah ski season 2025-2026 won’t go down in the record books for snowfall—but for us, it will be cherished for bringing us together.
