I want to share my friend Shelley’s everyday flatbread recipe. I originally posted this recipe in December of 2012, but wanted to update with the “real” recipe format.

Shelley gave me this recipe way back in my first baby days.

Days when a group of us young moms would get together for lunch at each other’s houses while we did crafts or tried new ideas to decorate our houses on a dime while our little toddlers played and hung on our legs.

That’s Shelley on the left up there. I always admired what a great cook she was.

Delicious stuff came from her kitchen.

She gave me this recipe for flatbread that we have probably made 692 time since.

Maybe 836.  I have lost count.

Grace has become the resident expert.

We rarely have Sunday dinner without this quick side dish, because first of all it is easy as can be.

And second, really, you must have some kind of bread with Sunday dinner in my book, and often we don’t have time for Wendy’s mouth-watering rolls.

Shelley’s Flatbread Recipe

So here you go:

Shelley's Everyday Flatbread

Course Side Dish


  • 2 1/4 tsp. active dry yeast (or use one packet you can buy at the grocery store)
  • 1 C. warm water (tap hot)
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. oil
  • 2 C. flour (up to 3 if too wet)


  • Simply mix ingredients together in a bowl.
  • Let rise for 15-30 minutes (if you have time...not even necessary!)
  • Roll out, and score for breadsticks
  • Bake at 450 degrees for 5-7 minutes until golden on top.
  • Spread with melted garlic butter. We also sprinkle with garlic salt


I have used this recipe on so many occasions in so many ways!
You can add parmigiana, you can use it as a base for pizza dough (so many varieties with that!). You can even use it for a "dessert pizza and spread with Nutella, strawberries and/or banana slices. Yum.
All my girls have this recipe memorized and have taken turns being the "flat bread expert" when it comes to dinner prep.

  3. My mom has Celiacs and has had a hard time finding a flour that is interchangeable in most recipes. Someone told her about Grandpa's Flour and it is amazing. We can't tell a difference and she bakes everything with it! It is harder to find outside of Utah, but they do have a website; grandpas-kitchen.com. I keep it on hand for when our gluten free family come to visit.

    –King Arthur's Flour website (it's surprising but the best gf scones ever come from there.)

    Amazon is a great place to order gf supplies that your store doesn't carry. (Or they do, but you'd have to sell your firstborn to buy them)
    And Annie's gf mac and cheese is so good I practically lick the bowl clean. It's also a super easy quick meal.

  5. Shawni: You probably don't remember me but we were in the Social Work program together at BYU. I was one of the non-traditional students, you know, I was in my 40's. I did Joy School for years with all my little ones as well as many other programs your parents offered. I love the Eyrealm philosophie and wish more families would embrace them. I have had dealings with both your parents and, as you know, they are incredible people.
    Anyway, my granddaughter was recently diagnosed with Celiac disease so I am always looking for good recipes. I noticed your comment about going gluten free and wanted to share this recipe with you.

    Gluten Free Peanut Butter Cookies
    1 cup peanut butter
    1 cup brown sugar
    1 egg
    1 teaspoon baking soda
    Just mix all ingredients well and drop by spoonfuls onto greased cookie sheets. Bake at 350 degrees for 9 minutes. Let set for 5 minutes on sheets. They will be soft and yummy.

  8. I just thought I'd post about the gluten-free thing. We just started this year, I have two girls with Celiac's. I have used several bread mixes and flour mixes and am really pleased with Pamela's Products. You can order it on Amazon and it's been great to use as a substitute in some of our favorite family recipes. Good luck!

  9. Hi Shawni. This is probably such a silly question, but I just went to the store to get yeast, and didn't know whether to use the rapid rise or regular? I'm thinking rapid rise, but just want to be sure. I've never bought yeast! Can't wait to try out the flat bread!

  10. My family thanks you for posting this recipe. It tastes exactly like some bread we get from one of our favorite restaurants. We put butter, garlic salt and italian seasoning on it. YUMMY!!!!

  11. random question (since i'm not a cook or a bkaer) – but what type of yeast? instant, dry, or the yeast found in the fridge? we have the dry and the stuff found in the huge fridges in our grocery stores in Switzerland.
