If you haven’t been to The Dodo restaurant and you live near Salt Lake City, I’m telling you, it’s a must. It’s nostalgic for me too, because I used to go there in high school. They have lots of good things on the menu, but for me, the sandwiches are the best. Now, sure, the best way to get these puppies is to go to The Dodo itself, of course. But since the majority of us don’t have the luxury of living right next to it, I’m going to share how to make the quickest, easiest copycat sandwiches.

The greatest thing about these babies? You can whip them up so speedy-quick. This is super helpful whether you have a houseful or you have just you and your daughter home one night. These are sure to make anyone’s eyes sparkle.

Can you tell these are Lucy’s favorites?

How to make Copycat Dodo turkey sandwiches

This is all you need:

The Dodo Copycat Turkey Sandwiches

The quickest and most tasty sandwich you will ever make
Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 5 minutes
Course Main Course
Cuisine American

Ingredients

  • 1 lb. Turkey from the deli have them slice it so thin it's almost falling apart
  • 1/4 lb. Baby Swiss Cheese, sliced
  • 4 hoagie rolls
  • 1 sliced avocado (optional)
  • 1/3 c. grape jelly
  • 1/3 c. barbecue sauce Recipe calls for "slow-simmered Kraft original," but I bet any variety would work.

Instructions

  • Load hoagie rolls with as much turkey as you desire…honestly the more the better in my opinion.
  • Add slices of the baby swiss cheese.
  • Broil on high in oven for approx. 3-5 minutes or until cheese is melted and bread is slightly browned.
  • Mix equal parts of barbecue sauce and grape jelly in a saucepan on the stove.
  • Serve hot and dip in that strange concoction of grape jelly and bbq sauce.
  • Add avocado if you have some…this makes it extra tasty.
  • Enjoy!

Notes

Note that the turkey pictured in these photos isn’t as thinly sliced or plentifully stacked as I normally would love. But it’s what we had on hand.

There you go: a little “present” for those days when you don’t have much time for dinner, but want something delicious. That’s every night, am I right? We honestly could eat these every night I have to say.

  1. I live so close to The Dodo, I can walk there. It’s my absolute favorite restaurant! Although, my favorite thing to order is the Artichoke Pie, along with a side salad. I try and branch out, but I just love it sooooo much!

  2. This is unrelated to the sandwiches, but thank you for the easy peasy go-to! I can’t wait to try it!
I am coming to visit the Phoenix/Scottsdale area in a couple months and want to go see a show or go to some sort of live event. Where/how do you find out about things going on in your area? I have found several sites that sell tickets to different things, but I’m having a hard time finding a good match for our group.
    Thanks

    1. I’m late getting back to you…I hope you were able to get some good things lined up. If not, the only thing I can think of to find live events would be googling to try to find something. I think there’s an improv place we went to years ago that was fun (although I can’t remember the name?). We rented a boat on Tempe Town Lake one time that was fun…I think you can also rent paddleboards. You could rent and paddleboard at Saguaro Lake as well. And of course, I always love hiking! https://71toes.com/a-guide-to-some-good-hikes-in-the-desert/

  3. Where do you find out about events/cultural things in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area? I’m visiting in a couple months and am having a hard time finding the right event for our group. Thanks
